Bern: Competition for the Viererfeld starts in January
The large-scale Viererfeld/Mittelfeld urban development project in Bern is taking shape: the municipal council has approved the site and housing strategy. The urban planning competition is to begin in January.

According to the municipal council, this is the largest urban development competition and also the largest urban development project in Bern for many years. A new urban quarter with around 1,140 apartments for 3,000 people is to be built on Viererfeld/Mittelfeld. "It should be urban, sustainable, free of obstacles and green, as well as forward-looking in terms of mobility and energy consumption," demands the municipal council, which sees great opportunities to realize a pioneering project.
The development site is to become a spatially and socially mixed residential neighborhood with high ecological standards; at least half of the apartments will be realized by non-profit housing developers. The housing should be affordable for different income levels and appeal to different lifestyles, household types and age groups.
The competition for the midfield/field of four will be launched in January 2018. In a first step, 25 planning teams will be selected in a prequalification, including three to five young teams. By fall 2018, the teams are to develop design proposals for an attractive, dense and mixed urban neighborhood.
