St. Gallen: Building permit for hospital extension

The Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen (KSSG) is to be renovated and expanded, and the new building of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Switzerland is also planned. Building permits have now been issued for both projects.

Since its foundation in 1873, the Kantonsspital St. Gallen (KSSG) has been repeatedly expanded and renovated at its current location. The last major expansion, the new construction of the striking high-rise building, dates from 1975. Now there is again a high need for renewal and renovation, and there is also a great need for additional usable space.

The plan is therefore to renovate and expand in stages and to centralize all functional areas at the current KSSG site. In the first stage, the bed tower 07A and a central underground car park are to be built. In addition, the Stiftung Ostschweizer Kinderspital (OKS) intends to move the Children's Hospital from its current location in Grossacker to the KSSG site. This is because there is a great need for additional space and synergies are to be exploited.

At its last meeting, the Building Permit Commission approved the building application for the planned new buildings of around 20,000 sqm and the underground parking for around 450 vehicles of the first stage. The building application includes a three-story base building with two high-rise buildings on the edges and emerged as the winner of a two-stage project competition. The construction project will be implemented in stages over the next ten years.
