Basel: Green light for second Helvetia high-rise building

The Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt gives the green light for the construction of the "Helvetia Campus" on St. Alban-Anlage. Helvetia Versicherungen is planning to increase the density of its site; the Grand Council has approved the development plan for this.

The centerpiece is a second high-rise by Herzog and de Meuron next to the existing one. Built between 1954 and 1956, the existing 45-meter high-rise was once the headquarters of Patria Versicherungen. It is now to receive a twin of the same height. A residential building will have to make way for the eleven-story office building. The number of jobs in the office section is to increase from 800 to 1,200.

At the end of the staggered planned development, however, the residential share should be larger in terms of area than it is today - in a later stage, Helvetia plans to build a new building with 50 rental apartments on the other side of the St. Alban-Anlage. (ah)
