Zurich: Residential construction booming

Last year, 3,360 apartments were completed in the city of Zurich. This means that new construction activity is more intensive than it has been for decades, according to Statistik Stadt Zürich.

In 2018, more apartments were completed than at any time in over sixty years, according to a statement from Statistik Stadt Zürich. As fewer apartments were demolished, the housing stock also increased by 2,725 units, the strongest increase since 1954.

According to the data, most new apartments were built in District 9. Here, 855 apartments were built, 751 of them in Altstetten - equivalent to a quarter of all new apartments in the entire city area. In districts 2 and 11, the housing stock grew by 500 units each. In circle 4, no apartments were completed in 2018, but 21 were demolished. This makes this circle the only one with a negative balance.

According to the report, almost half of the new apartments were built by private companies. Building cooperatives created a quarter of the new apartments with 870 units, but also recorded almost half of all demolitions (290 apartments).

The construction boom is unlikely to continue in 2019, according to the city of Zurich's statisticians: both the number of approved apartments and the number of apartments under construction are declining. (ah)
