The Galenica Group has had its headquarters at Untermattweg 8 in the west of Berne for more than 50 years. The building comprises office and production workplaces for around 480 employees.

Now Galenica wants to renovate the property, expand it structurally and turn it into its headquarters. The plan is to create a pure office building with almost twice as many workplaces as before, and to relocate the production facilities to other sites.

Since the site is currently located in the industrial and commercial zone, a rezoning is necessary. According to its own information, Bern's municipal council has now approved the corresponding referendum bill for the attention of the city council. Voters are expected to be able to vote on the proposal in February 2020.

The city of Bern reports that the development regulations stipulate that the car parking spaces - with a few exceptions - are to be located inside the building. This would allow the adjacent parcel to the south to be used for other purposes. Tree plantings and as many unsealed surrounding areas as possible are also planned. Flat roofs are to be greened, provided they are not used as terraces or for energy generation. (ah)
