Lausanne: Green light for museum district

The Federal Court has rejected the last appeal against the construction of the Vaud Art Museum. This means that nothing more stands in the way of the construction of the new museum district near Lausanne train station. Work is scheduled to start at the end of January 2016.

According to the canton of Vaud, the Federal Court has rejected an appeal against a hotly disputed demolition permit for buildings on the site of the SBB locomotive hall, which is no longer in use, and against the construction of the art museum (Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts, mcb-a). This means that the mcb-a, which is estimated to cost around CHF 84 million, can be built as the first stage of the planned museum district. The museum is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2019.

In addition to the mcb-a, the museum district will also house the Design Museum (mudac) and the Photography Museum (Musée de l'Elysée) in the future. These are to be housed in a joint building. The Foundation of the painter Félix Vallotton and the Toms Pauli Foundation, which is dedicated to textile art, are to be housed in another building of the Art Museum. The investment volume for these two buildings amounts to CHF 100 million. (ah)
