Swiss Post will close its branch in the historic building at Freie Strasse 12/Gerbergasse 13 at the end of 2021. A successor solution is also being sought with the other tenants, according to the Axa Investment Foundation. The striking building will then be put to a new use.

The Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron have been commissioned with the planning for a repositioning. The structure of the building is to be upgraded and, depending on the concept, alterations to the interior of the building are also planned. Overall, the aim is to improve accessibility and permeability in the building and to allow various uses, such as shops, offices, service outlets, restaurants or even a post office. According to Axa, the appearance of the listed building will not be significantly changed.

Herzog & de Meuron are now to draw up proposals for a repositioning, concept and refurbishment; according to Axa, a building application is planned for summer 2021. The earliest start of the first renovation work is planned for mid-2022. How long the refurbishment will take can only be said once the new concept for the building has been determined, Axa said.
