New quarter for Bellinzona
An ecological model quarter with an innovation park is to be built on the site of the SBB workshops in downtown Bellinzona. The city, SBB and canton have presented the project.
The Nuovo Quartiere Officine will be built on a 120,000-square-meter site that is currently still home to the historic SBB workshops. The workshops will be relocated to Arbedo-Castione in 2026, which is also when the realization of the new quarter is to begin. An innovation park, residential space and areas for offices and stores are planned in several buildings.
The project "Porta del Ticino - Urban Living Lab" by the team consisting of the Zurich office SA Partners, TAM Associati from Venice and the Milanese landscape architect Franco Giorgetta is to be implemented. According to a joint statement by SBB, the canton and the city, the project is convincing with its "bold urban planning and landscape design approach": the central area of the site is to remain undeveloped and be available to the entire population as a green space. The neighborhood will be built around the more than 100-year-old "Cattedrale", one of the most important industrial buildings in Ticino. Locomotives are still serviced in this listed centerpiece of the SBB workshops. (ah)
