Zurich: Residential construction activity at record level in 2015
Construction activity in the city of Zurich reached a long-term high of 3,210 apartments in 2015. Two-thirds more apartments were built last year than in 2014.
Building cooperatives completed twice as many apartments in 2015 as in the previous year. In condominium ownership, almost three times as many apartments were built as in the previous year. 81 percent of the completions were realized as part of replacement construction projects, writes the city of Zurich in a media release.
Since 2011, the city of Zurich has seen exceptionally high residential construction activity, with 1,900 to 2,500 apartments each year. In 2015, these already high figures were significantly exceeded with 3,210 new apartments. Not since 1953 have so many new apartments been built in the city of Zurich as in 2015. The citywide housing stock thus increased by 2,486 apartments, as 724 apartments were demolished.
As in 2014, the highest number of new apartments was built in Schwamendingen in 2015. New construction activity there was dominated by two large cooperative projects with 200 and 300 new apartments. More than 400 new apartments were also built in districts 2 and 5. Construction activity was lower in districts 3 and 8, and no new apartments were built in district 1, as in most previous years. Many new apartments can be expected again in 2016: At the end of 2015, 5,986 apartments were under construction, according to the City of Zurich. (mr)
