Construction work on the municipal housing project at Centralweg 15 began at the beginning of July; actual construction work is scheduled to start at the beginning of August 2021. The Fund for Land and Housing Policy is building 13 apartments and a studio on the previously fallow site with - in view of the location and the standard of the development - affordable rents. Some of the apartments will be let in the "Low-cost housing with rental criteria (GüWR)" segment.

The project is based on an architectural competition held back in 2010. "Due to parliamentary initiatives, legal proceedings and, last but not least, the political demand for affordable housing in the Lorraine, implementation was delayed," the city of Bern announced in a media release. In particular, the feared high rents caused criticism. In order to reduce the rent, the original total costs of CHF 8.82 million were recently reduced by around CHF 1.04 million by optimising the project. The property was put to interim use under the management of Quartierarbeit Bern-Nord. (tap)
