Allschwil: Sustainable office building for the BaseLink site
On the BaseLink site in Allschwil near Basel, an office building is to be built that will be energy positive after 30 years. Senn, Herzog & de Meuron and ZPF Ingenieure are jointly developing the innovative new building.

The office building, which the real estate company Senn, the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron and the engineering firm ZPF Ingenieure want to realise, is to set a new standard for sustainability. According to the companies involved, it will "pay back" the energy with which it was built within a generation and will be energy-positive after around 30 years. To this end, it will be constructed from a mix of natural materials, such as wood, clay and waste paper. In this way, the total energy used will be kept low. In addition, the energy harvest is to be maximized through the use of photovoltaics.
The planned building with the name HORTUS - House of Research, Technology, Utopia and Sustainability - will have a floor space of 10,000 sqm and is scheduled to open in 2025. The building will primarily be home to digital and tech companies.
In the next few years, the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, the pharmaceutical company Basilea Pharmaceutica and facilities of the University of Basel, among others, will move into office and laboratory space on the 75,000 sqm BaseLink-Areal development site.
