Hotels: Motel One wants to expand further
At the beginning of September, the German hotel group Motel One officially opened its first property in Switzerland in Basel. As company founder and CEO Dieter Müller says, further locations are planned.
Motel One in Basel is located at Freie Strasse 68 on Barfüsserplatz in the heart of the old town. It has 143 rooms and is located in a former office property, which the owner Swiss Prime Site (SPS) has extensively converted. It was already put into operation in mid-July, but has only now been ceremoniously opened.
In 2017, the second Motel One in Switzerland will follow in Zurich: Around 400 rooms will be built in the former Post Selnau - also in cooperation with SPS. As Motel One CEO Müller says, the company would like to open more hotels in Switzerland, namely in Geneva and Bern. However, there are no concrete plans yet. Motel One is also in talks with Swiss Prime Site for further expansion. The real estate company has invested around CHF 100 million in the conversion of the two buildings.
Motel One currently has 53 hotels in eight countries with a total of 14,300 rooms. Another 20 hotels with 8,000 rooms are currently under construction. Last year, the chain generated sales of 322 million euros with an occupancy rate of over 75 percent. (ah)
