Zug: Start of construction for Zephyr East

Construction work has begun on the Zephyr East project in the Zug Tech Cluster. The new building is considered the largest construction project to date in which CO2-enriched concrete is being used.

The new Zephyr East building will serve V-Zug as a new production and assembly building from 2023. For the construction project, V-Zug Infra AG is relying on Holcim's Evopact Recarb recycled concrete and an innovative process developed by ETH spinoff Neustark. In this process, CO2 is removed from a wastewater treatment plant and stored in the recycled concrete. The construction company Marti Zentralschweiz, which is building the four-storey shell, is using 4,200 m3 of the recycled concrete, Holcim says. Compared to a conventional construction method, 71 tonnes of CO2 are saved, the company says.

The technology has been tested in Switzerland in recent months and is now being used commercially, Holcim added. At the concrete plant in Cham, which is just five kilometers from the construction site, the CO2-enriched aggregate is processed into fresh concrete and then delivered to Zug. Giovanni Barbarani, Head Concrete Performance at Holcim Switzerland, describes the project as a "milestone on the road to sustainable construction in Switzerland, thanks in part to its regional nature and short transport distances".
