Zurich: New plans for the Swissôtel high-rise building
The former Swissôtel in Oerlikon will house the first Swiss property of the Mama Shelter hotel chain. Apartments, gastronomy and a coworking space are also planned.

In 2020, the Swissôtel at Schulstrasse 44 near Zurich Oerlikon station was forced to close - now Credit Suisse Asset Management has announced how the striking high-rise will be used in the future. The listed, 85-meter-high building will continue to house a hotel, but only the lower nine of the 28 floors will be used for hotel operations in the future. Here, KNSA Hospitality will operate a hotel of the Mama Shelter brand - a long-term contract has already been concluded, informs Credit Suisse Asset Management (CSAM), which acted on behalf of its real estate fund Credit Suisse Real Estate Fund Hospitality.
According to CSAM, 132 apartments will be built in the remaining part of the high-rise, in particular minilofts with 1.5 to 2.5 rooms. The ground and first floors will house the hotel lobby, a restaurant, shops, conference rooms and a co-working zone. Conversion work is scheduled to start in March 2022, and Mama Shelter is scheduled to open in the second half of 2024.
The Mama Shelter in Oerlikon will be the first house of the French chain in Switzerland, worldwide the company is represented at 15 locations. The concept envisages that the hotels should also be meeting places, work and living spaces. In Oerlikon, too, the new tenant wants to offer added value for hotel guests and the local population, according to CSAM: In addition to an innovative gastronomy concept and a co-working zone, a publicly accessible city balcony with a bar is planned on the base of the building.
