Zurich: Referendum on UBS high-rise coming
It has not yet been officially confirmed, but according to a media report, the required number of votes has been exceeded.
The referendum against the UBS office tower at Zurich-Altstetten station will apparently go ahead. The Tages-Anzeiger newspaper reports, citing a local Green Party councillor, that 2,400 signatures have been collected. An official statement from the City of Zurich is not yet available.
The petition was initiated by Grüne Jugend Zürich. Its arguments include the unfavorable emissions balance in the operation and especially in the construction of new high-rise buildings, as well as vacant offices and the simultaneous housing shortage in Zurich (IB reported). A majority of Zurich's municipal council is in favor of the project.
A high-rise building up to 115 meters high is possible on the Vulkanplatz site. UBS is planning to construct the building using a timber-concrete hybrid construction method. The building is to be certified with the LEED sustainability seal of approval at the highest "Platinum" level. (aw)
