Winterthur: 130 cooperative apartments on bus depot
A former bus and streetcar depot is being built over by three cooperatives. Some of the existing buildings are to be retained. Commercial space is also planned.
A cooperative housing development is being built on the site of a former bus and streetcar depot in Winterthur. The architectural competition for the site on Deutweg was decided three years ago; it was won by Zurich architects Conen Sigl Architekt:innen GmbH. In the meantime, the preliminary project is almost complete, as the developers announced on request.
The plan is to retain the majority of the existing buildings between Tösstalstrasse and Talgutstrasse and add new buildings. In addition to around 130 apartments, a kindergarten and a square with a neighborhood café or neighborhood meeting place are to be built. There are also plans for commercial space - a total of around 1,700 square meters in an existing administration building and part of a depot hall - as well as community gardens.
Three housing cooperatives have joined forces for the "Depot Deutweg" project. The largest of these is GWG Gemeinnützige Wohnbaugenossenschaft Winterthur, which manages 1,400 apartments. Gaiwo offers housing for older people and people with disabilities in over 600 apartments. Founded in 1944, the Talgut housing cooperative has most of its 300 or so apartments in the neighborhood of Depot Deutweg, in the Mattenbach district. They submitted the planning application for the car-free neighborhood in April. However, it will be some time before the Depot Deutweg is occupied: the move is planned for 2028.
Zurich-based Archipel GmbH is responsible for overall project management. (aw)
