Stiftung Abendrot has won an investor competition organized by the Canton of Zurich as land owner and building lease provider. It is now realizing the required 180 studio apartments for employees of the University Hospital Zurich (USZ). Stiftung Abendrot will operate and manage these in accordance with a framework agreement with the USZ.

The development also includes 237 shared rooms and studio apartments for students, which are rented by WOKO Studentische Wohngenossenschaft and operated and managed by the company itself. In total, "Binz 111" will create 417 residential units.

Complementary public uses on the first floor, such as a restaurant, a community room, guest rooms, multi-purpose rooms, a laundromat, and studios/small business spaces yet to be rented, are intended to revitalize the area.

New meeting place in the neighborhood

The development, designed by Gmür & Geschwentner Architekten, consists of two elongated buildings with five and nine floors, respectively, which open up the public space from Üetlibergstrasse into a central, publicly accessible courtyard. According to the architects, the development integrates well into its surroundings and creates a new meeting point in the neighborhood.

The construction start for the project took place in July 2016. In the meantime, building construction has begun on the site. According to the construction schedule, the shell will be completed before the end of 2017. This will be followed by the interior work. Handover to the future users is scheduled for August 2018. Halter AG is the general contractor.
