Zurich: Test planning for slaughterhouse site begins
Food production will continue to play a major role on the site in Altstetten in the future - but residential use is also under discussion.
The development of the Zurich abattoir site is entering a new phase. As announced by the city, test planning will begin in November for the site on the border of Aussersihl and Altstetten, which has been used by the meat industry for over a hundred years and is to be gradually developed from 2030 onwards. The city wants "an urban workplace area" with a focus on local food production and processing, public green and open spaces and a new school location. However, a possible residential use on the site between Hohlstrasse and Baslerstrasse is also to be examined as part of the test planning. "The architectural and urban identity of the site will be preserved," promises the city.
The results of the test planning will serve as the basis for a master plan that will define the guidelines for sustainable development from 2027. In the next phase - according to the timetable from 2027 - specific construction projects will be developed and implemented.
As was announced two years ago, the city of Zurich terminated the rental agreement with the slaughterhouse operator, which was due to expire in 2029 (IB reported). (aw)
