"The Economist": Zurich is the third most expensive city in the world
Two Swiss cities are among the ten most expensive cities in the world, according to The Economist's ranking: Zurich is the third most expensive city in the world, Geneva is in 7th place.
As in the previous year, Singapore tops the ranking list of the British magazine The Economist. Hong Kong follows in second place, and Zurich in third. Five of the ten most expensive cities are located in Asia - apart from the two leaders, Tokyo (4), Osaka (5) and Seoul (6). Geneva and Paris share seventh place, with New York and Copenhagen in ninth.
For more than 30 years The Economist the cost of living of cities worldwide. The criteria for the ranking are the prices charged for local products such as food and clothing, transportation, the level of rents and the cost of household help and other services. The study did not include the wage and salary levels of the cities, which is why the ranking is likely to be of more interest to travelers. New York is always chosen as the reference city for the ranking and given an index value of 100, with the other metropolises receiving either higher or lower values based on this.
