Foundry in Winterthur receives Prix Lignum in silver
The Giesserei in Winterthur won the silver medal at the Prix Lignum. The owner of the multi-generation house, which was completed in 2013, is GESEWO Genossenschaft für selbstverwaltetes Wohnen, and the designs are by Galli Rudolf Architekten from Zurich. Knecht AG Oberwil and ARGE MGH Implenia Strabag were responsible for the execution of the woodwork in two lots.
With over 150 apartments on six floors, the property in the Neuhegi development area on the site of the former Sulzer foundry in Oberwinterthur is one of the largest timber construction estates in Switzerland. Except for the basement and the staircases, everything is built entirely of wood.
Two six-storey longitudinal buildings, oriented in a north-south direction, together with two low cross-buildings enclose a courtyard. On the ground floor there are public uses, above are the apartments.
The Prix Lignum honours the innovative, high-quality and forward-looking use of wood in buildings, interior design, furniture and artistic works. The prize is awarded in five major regions of Switzerland. Three national prize winners are chosen from the regional winners in the categories of gold, silver and bronze. This year, gold went to the depot of the Museum of Communication in Schwarzenburg, while bronze went to a detached house in Sarreyer in the Lower Valais. (ah)
