Winterthur: Plant 1 now called Lokstadt
Winterthur's newly emerging district on the former industrial site Werk 1 has been renamed Lokstadt. The name is intended to recall the site's origins as a locomotive forge.
Representatives of the city of Winterthur and Implenia have christened the newly emerging district, which is based on the public design plan "Sulzerareal Werk 1", Lokstadt. The new naming is also intended to symbolically begin the transition of the site into the future, Implenia informs.
"The name Lokstadt brings together the past and the future of this area. World-famous locomotives were once built here and industrial history was written in the process," says Michael Künzle, Mayor of Winterthur, explaining the naming.
The development will be built in several stages over a period of around ten years. In the end, it will offer around 120,000 square meters of living and working space for the future 1,500 residents, with gastronomy and cultural facilities also planned. Construction of the first project is scheduled to begin next year.
A total of more than 750 apartments are being built, with 30 percent of the living space reserved for affordable housing. Five squares, from the central 6,000-square-meter Dialogplatz to pocket parks, will serve as recreational and meeting spaces. Lokstadt will be Winterthur's first 2,000-watt site.
