Zurich: First stage of Greencity is ready for occupancy

Two years after the groundbreaking ceremony, the first buildings and apartments of the Greencity urban district in Zurich South are now being occupied. By the end of January 2018, all buildings of the first stage with a total of 439 apartments are to be ready for occupancy, including 235 cooperative apartments.

The first stage comprises five buildings: three of them have been taken over by the GBMZ, Hofgarten and WOGENO Zürich cooperatives and the Stiftung Wohnungen für kinderreiche Familien. In them, they offer 235 apartments/residential units (1.5- to 6.5-room) as well as common rooms and commercial space. According to Valérie Clapasson, communications officer for the Greencity cooperatives, the apartments are already all rented out.

The remaining two buildings of the first stage belong to Swiss Life, which is also realizing rental apartments in them. The two buildings will be occupied in October 2017 and April 2018.

More apartments, a hotel and office building

The second stage comprises three buildings with condominiums and rental apartments. These will be ready for occupancy in stages from May 2018 to summer 2019. A centerpiece of the stage is the former spinning mill with its listed facade, which is intended to recall the industrial past of the site. Inside the spinning mill, 40 modern loft apartments are being built, all of which have already been sold. A restaurant will be located on the first floor.

The third stage will see the construction of a Meininger Group hotel and several office buildings. The hotel is expected to open in 2020 and will have around 600 beds. The developer and general contractor Losinger Marazzi plans to complete the third stage in 2021. The keystone for Greencity will be an elementary school, which the city of Zurich plans to open in 2023.

When completed, the urban quarter will be the first certified 2,000-watt site in Switzerland and will provide space for around 2,000 residents and 3,000 jobs.
