Basel: New building for life science campus
A general planning team led by Zurich-based Caruso St John Architects has won the competition for a new building for the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel. The investment volume is CHF 241 million.

The competition for a new building for the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel (DBM) on the Schällemätteli campus has been decided: The jury has selected the "MCDLIX" project by architects Caruso St John, Zurich, and recommended it for further development. The competition decision represents an important step for the University of Basel, as the DBM, which is currently spread across several locations, can be brought together.
The planned building will replace the current Biocenter at Klingelbergstrasse 70. After completion of the new Biocenter, which is currently under construction, the old Biocenter will be demolished in 2019. Construction of the new DBM building can then begin. Construction will take around three years, meaning that the building is expected to be completed in 2023 and ready for occupation in 2024.
The new nine-storey building, which docks directly onto the Pharma Center, offers space for around 700 employees and 200 students and covers a floor area of over 35,000 square meters. The investment sum for the new building is CHF 241 million. (ah)
