Glarus: Private investor buys Electrolux site
Glaro Immobilien AG acquires the production site of the household appliance manufacturer Electrolux and the associated buildings in Schwanden (Canton Glarus). The new owner intends to develop the site step by step and locate new production companies there.
Electrolux announced in December 2014 that it would withdraw from Schwanden by the end of 2015 for economic reasons. Together with representatives of the canton and the local municipality, solutions for the conversion of the Electrolux site have been sought since then. However, the search for investors proved difficult under the given economic circumstances and was stopped in the summer of 2015, Electrolux writes in a statement.
The canton of Glarus had also shown interest in the site and the buildings. Together with the municipality of Glarus Süd and the "KMU und Wohnen" foundation, it wanted to realize a service center on the site. However, the company gave preference to the private initiative because "in this way, important jobs in the manufacturing industry are preserved for the region and new commercial settlements are even possible in the future," according to Electrolux.
