Basel: Hotel industry booming
The tourism business in Swiss cities is doing well - and especially well in Basel. According to a report in "Tageswoche," Basel will set a new record for 2015 with 1.2 million overnight stays.

From 2013 to 2014, the number of overnight hotel stays in Basel rose by 5.2 percent, the highest increase in Switzerland. Between 2000 and 2014, Basel even increased by 78 percent. In Zurich, growth in the same period was 30 percent.
In the ranking of Swiss tourist destinations, Basel climbed from eighth to fifth place between 2000 and 2014, leaving behind the resorts of Davos and St. Moritz, as well as the cities of Bern and Lausanne.
For 2015, Daniel Egloff, director of Basel Tourism, expects growth of around four percent. Without the franc shock, it would probably have been seven percent, he told the Daily News.
Business tourism and trade fair and congress tourism are particularly strong in Basel. In leisure tourism, however, the city has also been able to catch up strongly. (ah)
