The 15.4-km-long Ceneri Base Tunnel is expected to go into operation in December 2020.

Like the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the Ceneri Base Tunnel consists of two single-track tubes connected every 325 meters by a cross-cut of around 40 meters. Due to its length, no lane changes or emergency stops are necessary.

The first preliminary work was carried out as early as 1997 with the exploratory tunnel. In 2008, a tunnel boring machine excavated a 2.3 km long window adit. At the end of this adit are two underground caverns, which have been the starting point for the main drives to the south and north since 2010. (ah)
