Tourism: Up to 1,500 hotels facing closure?
Overnight stays in Swiss hotels declined significantly in 2015 - mainly due to the franc shock. Hotels in the mountain regions in particular suffered.
The industry association Hotelleriesuisse believes that the number of hotels in Switzerland will fall from around 5,000 today to 3,500 over the next ten years. Three-star hotels will be particularly affected, as they will have a hard time not only due to the strong Swiss franc, but also because of low-cost international hotel chains and platforms such as Airbnb.
