Basel: Another record in overnight stays
The Basel tourism industry recorded around 1.2 million overnight stays in 2015 - a new record. However, the franc shock did not leave the hotel industry in Basel unscathed. The number of overnight stays from Germany, the most important foreign market, fell by 3.9 percent.

The fact that the overall figures are positive is mainly due to domestic guests: According to the Statistical Office, their overnight stays rose by 9.5 percent to 398,179, while foreign visitors saw a small increase of 0.6 percent to 803,617 overnight stays thanks to growth from the USA and the Asian market.
Overall, the number of overnight stays in Basel's 62 accommodation establishments rose by 38,858, an increase of 3.3 percent. A survey conducted for the first time showed that the share of leisure tourists was 34.5 percent. For this purpose, 400,000 overnight stays in three- to five-star hotels were recorded.
For the current year, Basel expects a further two percent increase in overnight stays. (ah)
