Hotels: Declining room rates

The abolition of the minimum euro exchange rate had consequences for room rates in Swiss hotels. According to an evaluation by the international booking portal Hotel.de, the cost of overnight stays fell by five percent year-on-year to CHF 159.

In many Swiss cities, hoteliers have reacted to the abolition of the minimum euro exchange rate with price reductions, according to the study by Hotel.de. The study examined hotel bookings made via the two sites www.hotel.de and www.hotel.info were made in the comparative month of March. All bookings in 1- to 5-star hotels in the respective cities are included in the average price shown.

With a room rate of just over CHF 230 (-2.2%), overnight stays in Geneva remained the most expensive, followed by Basel at CHF 197 (-2.1%). In Zurich, prices fell by 2.4 percent to CHF 167.

Overnight accommodation costs decreased most significantly in Lucerne, where the average room rate fell by 15 percent to CHF 120. In Lausanne, prices fell by 13 percent to 156 CHF. According to the study, only in Bern did overnight costs rise in contrast to the previous year. In the federal city, average prices were 2.3 percent higher than the previous year at CHF 163.
