Bern: Stricter energy regulations for new buildings

New buildings in the canton of Bern must be operated more efficiently and with a higher proportion of renewable energies from the beginning of September 2016. The government council has amended the cantonal energy ordinance accordingly.

As of September 1, new buildings will be subject to around 15 percent stricter energy consumption limits. In addition, new large commercial and administrative buildings, as well as leisure facilities, must be equipped with building automation systems and regularly optimized.

The partial revision has no impact on existing residential properties, nor does it change the applicable regulations for conversions or changes of use.

The canton is also expanding its existing subsidy program. On the one hand, the replacement of oil heating systems with renewable energy will be promoted, as is already the case for electric heating systems. On the other hand, operational optimization in non-residential buildings will be financially supported.

With the partial revision, the government council is complying with a resolution of the Conference of Cantonal Energy Directors. The latter wants to harmonize energy regulations nationwide. (ah)
