Coop puts new logistics center into operation

After three years of construction, Coop's new logistics center in Schafisheim (AG) has been put into operation. Coop invested more than CHF 600 million in the project, which was considered the largest private construction site in Switzerland.

The logistics center consists of a bakery/pastry shop, a national distribution center for frozen products, and a regional distribution center for the Zurich area, northwestern Switzerland, and central Switzerland. In the new large bakery, Coop produces 60,000 tons of bread and baked goods annually. It is thus the largest bakery in Switzerland and one of the most modern in Europe.

First Minergie-certified industrial site

The expanded logistics site is part of Coop's so-called logistics and bakery strategy 2015+. With the Schafisheim site, Coop intends to modernize and further centralize its own logistics and bakeries. In addition, the plant will make a major contribution to Coop's CO2 vision of operating all areas that can be directly influenced in a CO2-neutral manner by 2023. Among other things, a biomass heating center on the site will supply the ovens of the large bakery with energy. The biomass, in turn, consists of a mixture of wood chips and by-products originating from Coop's own milling operation, Swissmill.

A photovoltaic system has also been installed on the roof of the high-bay warehouse of the regional distribution center and the rail hall, supplying around 250,000 kilowatts of solar power per year for the logistics center. The new Coop logistics site in Schafisheim will be the first industrial site of its kind to receive Minergie certification. (ah)
