Fewer foreign guests in the hotel industry
In May 2016, the hotel industry in Switzerland registered a total of 2.7 million overnight stays, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to May 2015; however, from January to May 2016, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) counted only 13.7 million overnight stays, a decrease of 0.7 percent compared to the same period last year.

Overall, the number of overnight stays by foreign guests fell by 174,000 year-on-year to 7.3 million. According to FSO data, German, Chinese and Russian tourists in particular spent fewer nights in Switzerland than in the same period last year.
Swiss and British guests, on the other hand, generated more overnight stays: Domestic guests accounted for 6.5 million overnight stays - 80,000 more than in the same period last year. British guests reported an increase of around 30,000 overnight stays. Whether the influx of British guests will continue after the economic turmoil resulting from Brexit is questionable, according to industry circles. (bw)
