Basel: Project developer builds car park near art museum
A car park with 350 parking spaces is being built under the St. Alban trench in a prime location in Basel's city center. The canton of Basel-Stadt granted the building permit for the project to a private project development company on October 18, 2016.
This means that Parking Kunstmuseum Basel AG has the green light for the realization of its project. The project would benefit the stores on Freie Strasse, the Aeschenvorstadt business center and the art and antiquities museums, the canton's Department of Construction and Transport wrote in a press release. The future car park is located in the immediate vicinity of Münsterplatz, which is becoming an increasingly important tourist attraction.
Construction is expected to begin in April 2018, after the Basel World Watch and Jewellery Show. The construction work on the surface will take around one year, with the subsequent mainly underground construction work taking a further two years. The opening is therefore planned for 2021. The Parking Kunstmuseum will be built under building rights. (ah)
