Conversion: New townscape for Mels

The conversion of the former Stoffel textile factory in Mels (SG) is picking up speed. After the building permit for the first stage was issued a good month ago, the building application for the second stage of the "Uptown Mels" project has now been submitted.

The striking 19th-century factory building, which stands on the edge of the slope with a view of the Rhine Valley, will be joined by a new building with a regular horizontal and vertical structure as part of the conversion project. There will be 75 2.5- to 5.5-room apartments, commercial studios on the first floor and a two-story underground parking garage. Completion is scheduled for spring 2019.

The building application also includes the construction of a fully automatic funicular railroad and the design of the factory park. In the park, a natural pool with sauna, barbecue areas and a children's playground are planned around the former diesel tank. The top station of the funicular will be located between the new building and the power plant. In the future, this will connect the area with the village center of Mels. (ah)
