Lucerne: University becomes tenant in Rösslimatt
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is the first main tenant for the new Lucerne Rösslimatt quarter.

A new urban quarter is to be built by 2040 on an approximately four-hectare site directly adjacent to Lucerne railway station and close to Lake Lucerne. As the first main tenant, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts will move into a new building with around 16,000 sqm on the site in 2025, SBB says.
The new building will provide space for 3,000 students, 6,500 continuing education participants and 400 employees of the two departments of economics and social work, according to the statement. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and SBB have entered into a 30-year partnership. At present, the Departments of Business and Social Work are spread across five locations; in future, there will be another location at Zentralstrasse 9 in addition to the building in Rösslimatt.
The Rösslimatt design plan, which SBB has drawn up with the city of Lucerne, envisages further buildings on six construction sites, which are expected to be planned and realised in stages up to 2040. According to SBB, a "diverse and attractive mix of uses" is to be created on the site. On the ground floors, public-oriented uses are planned that are intended to revitalise the quarter and link it with the surrounding districts.
There are also plans to upgrade the Frohburgsteg and to provide the district with a stronger connection to the station and the city centre for pedestrians and cyclists. A meeting area is to be created on the site of the current sidings on Güterstrasse. According to the plans, large parts of the area will be car-free. In the area in front of the first building, into which the university will move, a pedestrian zone with a speed limit of 20 km/h is planned.
According to SBB, demolition work will start on the first construction site in 2020. Construction of the new university building is scheduled to begin at the end of 2021, with commissioning planned for 2025. Work on the second construction site will start in 2021 at the earliest, and the new buildings can then be commissioned in 2024. (ah)
