Hotels: Number of overnight stays rises by almost half

Although there was a very strong increase in the number of overnight stays in H1, they remain below pre-crisis levels. Hotels in cities in particular are benefiting.

The number of overnight stays increased by over 47 % in the 1st half of the year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the increase was mainly due to more international demand: overnight stays by foreign visitors rose by 212% to 6.9 million. However, domestic demand also grew strongly (by 8.0%). Despite the increases, the pre-pandemic level was not reached. In H1 2019, the number of overnight stays had been 10.0% higher.

Increases mainly in the cities

Twelve of the 13 tourism regions registered an increase in overnight stays in H1 2022 compared to the same period last year. The largest relative increases were recorded in Geneva (+175.2%), the Zurich region (+155.8%) and the Basel region (+96.8%). Ticino recorded a decrease (-13.3%) compared to H1 2021. Domestic demand was strongest in urban regions (Zurich: +71.2%; Geneva: +58.3%; Basel: +42.0%). The strongest relative increase in foreign guests was recorded in the Bern region (+359.6%). (aw)
