Zurich becomes major tenant in Cologne's MesseCity

Zurich Insurance is to relocate its headquarters in Germany from Bonn to Cologne, renting 65,000 square meters of office space in the Deutz district on the right bank of the Rhine. The company's decision is seen as the starting signal for the construction of MesseCity, an office district between Deutz train station and the Cologne exhibition grounds. The investor is Messe-City Köln GmbH, a merger of Strabag Real Estate and ECE.

In three neighboring blocks, including a 60-meter tower, Zurich plans to consolidate the workplaces for the 2,700 employees who previously worked in Cologne-Riehl and in Bonn. The insurer plans to sell and lease back the real estate it no longer needs by the end of the year.

Zurich will occupy almost half of all office space in the entire MesseCity. Construction could start as early as next year. Two hotels are planned directly adjacent to the Zurich complex. Retail space, a large cinema and a casino are also planned. (ah)
