Herzog & de Meuron to redesign Postbank-Karree in Munich

By 2024, a modern, energy-efficient office complex with around 60,000 square meters of rental space will be created from the former Postbank-Karree near Munich's main railway station. The Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron is responsible for the planning.

The neighborhood between Bayerstrasse, Mittererstrasse, Schwanthalerstrasse and Paul-Heyse-Strasse, where Postbank has had its headquarters for decades, is being renewed. The old office complex is to be turned into a space for modern working environments, but also into a diverse meeting place for the city's residents, writes the Basel office Herzog & de Meuron, which emerged as the winner in a test planning procedure. A jury of representatives from Munich's planning department, city council, district committee and architectural experts had previously evaluated the designs of three participating architectural firms.

The building complex, which covers around 60,000 square meters and was built in 1992, will be renovated and redeveloped in terms of energy efficiency while retaining most of the existing building fabric. After the construction work, the property will continue to be used for retail, offices and gastronomy. The goal is to complete the building by 2024. BNP Paribas Real Estate has been commissioned as advisor for the future leasing of the quarter. The owner of the area since the beginning of 2018 is Credit Suisse Asset Management, which acquired the Postbank complex at the time for just under 280 million euros. (mr)
