Zurich takes action against usurious rents
The Zurich Cantonal Police, the Zurich City Police and the Zurich-Limmat Public Prosecutor's Office have taken action in a major operation against rent usury in Zurich. The owner of three apartment buildings and three employees were arrested.
The authorities uncovered some desolate conditions in the three apartment buildings on Neufrankengasse and Magnusstrasse. At least 120 people live in cramped quarters, some without functioning water, electricity or heat supply, at overpriced prices: For a room of about 10 to 20 square meters, rents of over CHF 1,000 per month were charged.
The arrested persons are the owner of the properties and three persons who are in the service of the property management. The three men and one woman are between 39 and 56 years old and come from Switzerland and Lebanon. The Zurich-Limmat public prosecutor's office has opened criminal proceedings for usury. (ah)
