Zurich: Ice field hockey stadium in Altstetten can be built
The municipal council of the city of Zurich has approved the ZSC Lions' stadium project on the Vulkan site in Altstetten by a large majority. The investment costs for the new stadium total CHF 169 million.
The plan is to build two halls under one roof: a main hall with a capacity for 11,600 fans (including 2,500 standing room) and a training hall with 220 seats and 80 standing room. Outside, terraces and courtyards extend the spectator area. There will also be restaurants and office space. The project competition for the new arena was won by Caruso St John Architects.
The municipal council approved the "Theatre of Dreams" with 93 votes in favor, 19 against and six abstentions. At the same time, the municipal council gave its approval for a CHF 120 million loan from the city of Zurich to ZSC Lions AG. The sum is earmarked for the construction of the stadium and must be repaid within 65 years. In addition, it has granted the building lease for the 28,000 square meter site with an annual building lease interest of CHF 35,000. In September, the Zurich electorate will decide on the project. Construction of the ice hockey arena is scheduled to begin in 2019, with commissioning planned for 2022. (ah)
