First Motel One in Switzerland opens

At Freie Strasse 68 in Basel, the Motel One Group has opened its first budget design hotel in Switzerland after around two years of renovation. Swiss Prime Site AG (SPS) had previously extensively converted the former office property at a cost of CHF 22 million.

"By converting part of the property into a hotel, we have certainly chosen the variant with the greatest challenge, but also the most sustainable in the long term. In addition, we are creating a long-awaited offer of attractive hotel rooms in the budget segment in Basel," said SPS CIO Peter Lehmann at the hotel opening. With the German hotel group Motel One, the "ideal partner" for two hotel projects in Basel and Zurich was found at the end of 2013, Lehmann added.

Following the inauguration of the 143-room hotel in downtown Basel, another hotel project by SPS and Motel One Group with around 400 rooms in downtown Zurich is expected to follow in summer 2017. Long-term leases have been signed for both properties. (mr)
