Zurich: Lidl rents in the Fraumünsterpost building
Lidl Switzerland is to open a store in downtown Zurich for the first time. To this end, the discounter is renting space in the tradition-steeped Fraumünsterpost in District 1. The lease agreement between Swiss Prime Site AG, the owner of the building, and Lidl Switzerland has already been signed.
Swiss Post will cease operations at Fraumünsterpost at the end of October 2016 and move to Uraniastrasse.
According to Lidl, the discounter will now work out a concept with the landlord and the relevant authorities that will ensure the preservation of the listed building, which was constructed in 1891, while at the same time allowing the operation of a Lidl store. The intention is not to change the architecture and atmosphere of the building, but even to re-emphasize it, says Marco Landolt, Head of Expansion at Lidl Switzerland. The hall on the first floor is therefore to be freed from the retrofitted elements of the previous tenant and, as far as possible, brought back into line with the original architecture.
The store's planned sales area is expected to be around 1,000 square meters and will include the discounter's full range of products. It is not yet known when the store will open. (ah)
