Zurich: Development planned on Zollstrasse

The Kalkbreite cooperative wants to realize the "Zollhaus" superstructure on Zollstrasse in the industrial district. For this purpose, the city is to sell the cooperative 1,285 sqm of land for CHF 2.183 million, this is what the city council is proposing to the municipal council.

The Kalkbreite cooperative is also acquiring an adjacent plot of land from SBB, so that the area on which the superstructure is being built totals just under 5,000 square meters.

The Zurich-based architectural team Enzmann Fischer Partner emerged as the winner of the open project competition organized by the Office for Buildings with its "Esperanto" project. The competition program also incorporated ideas that interested parties from the cooperative and the neighborhood had worked out together. "Esperanto" consists of three buildings. In addition to 48 apartments (ranging from 1.5-room apartments to hall apartments of up to 300 square meters), they include boarding rooms, a restaurant, a bistro, sales and service areas, and common rooms. The apartments are rented according to the principle of cost rent.

The Kalkbreite cooperative plans to submit the building application in the fall of 2016, with construction scheduled to begin in 2018 and occupancy in 2020.

Since the municipal properties are located in the industrial district (district 5), but the SBB parcel belongs to Aussersihl (district 4), the city district boundary will now run along the southern side of the site. The merged site will thus in future belong entirely to district 5 (ah).
