Lucerne: C&A department store to make way for new building
The C&A department store on Kapellgasse in Lucerne's Old Town is to be replaced by a new building. There are also plans to convert the C&A store on Hertensteinstrasse.
According to local media reports, Newport Holding Luzern plans to demolish the C&A department store at Kapellgasse 4 in Lucerne's old town down to its foundation walls. A new building is to be constructed on the site from 2018. The German holding company, which invests in well-established retail locations, had purchased the property from a community of heirs in April 2016.
According to a feasibility study, the new replacement building will include retail space as well as offices and apartments. A project competition for the new building is to be completed by summer 2017.
According to the newspaper report, however, no C&A store will take a further lease. The company is expected to close the Kapellgasse location in 2018 because of the opening of a new store in the Mall of Switzerland in 2017 and the remodeling and introduction of a new store concept in the main store at Hertensteinstrasse 58. A building application was recently submitted for this C&A department store. The landowner of the property is Redevco.
