According to local media reports, the study contract for the major project on the Felix Platter hospital site has been launched. In February, the lead building cooperative wohnen & mehr (w&m) will select a number of architectural teams to develop projects by the summer. The architects' submissions will then be judged in mid-August. The winning project will form the basis of a set of rules for the site.

Costs of CHF 200 million

With its current 61 members, including 26 housing cooperatives, w&m intends to raise 80 percent of the CHF 200 million investment amount as debt capital. This means that the cooperative's equity share amounts to around CHF 40 million.

w&m is aiming for a continuous green area with a good social mix and affordable three- to four-bedroom apartments. A total of between 550 and 600 residential units are to be built by 2022. The base of the old hospital building is to be given a passageway to accommodate childcare, a café and event rooms, among other things.

It is still unclear whether a user will be found for the small therapy pool in the old building. It is also unclear from where the old building's car park, which is currently accessible via the center of the site, will be accessed in the future. The future of the two staff houses from the 1960s on Ensisheimerstrasse is also uncertain. They will be used for a refugee home and a student residence until 2025. After that, they will be replaced or converted.
