The background to the contract is that train manufacturer Stadler Rail wants to leave its site in Altenrhein and move to St. Margrethen. The rented infrastructure in Altenrhein is outdated and the owner of the site is not willing to make the necessary investments and renovations, Stadler says. The train manufacturer sees this as limiting productivity at this location and weakening its competitiveness in the international environment.

According to HIAG as the land owner, the building lease has a term until December 31, 2080 plus the possibility of extension. Thorsten Eberle, site developer and member of the extended management team at HIAG, emphasizes that this is a clear commitment to Switzerland as a business location and the region.

According to HIAG, the Economic Development Agency of the Canton of St. Gallen played a leading role in brokering the deal. The building lease agreement is still dependent on the legally binding rezoning of the property to the industrial zone. An application has already been submitted, according to Stadler Rail.
