The city of Aarau and the canton of Aargau as the largest landowner on the perimeter are planning the new use of the barracks area in the center of Aarau. In 2030, the military's lease expires, and then the course should be set for further development of the property.

First of all, a guiding principle for the conversion was defined. In particular, a mixed, diverse and also non-commercial use, the construction of a central town square as well as the cultural use of the riding hall with theater and concert hall are desired. The city, the canton and the private sector want to cooperate in the development and implementation of the individual projects.

Now, three interdisciplinary teams are sounding out the urban development potential and possible uses of the barracks area with a test planning. The teams are to clarify questions concerning the urban development situation, building typology, arrangement of uses, extent of use, use of open space, setting of volumes and structuring on the site.

The urban planning study is intended to clarify various possible solutions, their feasibility, economic viability and further implementation. The test planning forms the basis for a subsequent master plan.
