The office building, which is located on the VHS site, dates back to the 1960s and needs to be renovated due to corrosion damage to the façade and high energy consumption, among other things. The building is to be repurposed as part of the total refurbishment. To this end, the VHS has joined forces with the Swiss Youth Hostels (SJH). According to earlier information, a youth hostel of the highest standard ("top" class) with up to 250 beds is planned.

A replacement solution is to be found for the tenants in the office building, including the administration of the Swiss Museum of Transport. The plan is to construct a multi-purpose building on the Haldenstrasse side where the Rail Hall I is located. The Swiss Museum of Transport Board has already given the green light for a preliminary project. The building application is scheduled for the end of 2017. The Swiss Youth Hostels will press ahead with their accommodation project once planning permission for the new multi-purpose building has been granted.
