Bern: Grand Council clears the way for Tram Ostermundigen

The canton of Bern is clearing the way for the streetcar connection from Bern to Ostermundigen. This should improve the connection of the municipality, where among other things a large development is planned on the Bären site.

On June 7, the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern approved the commitment credit for the streetcar line from Bern to Ostermundigen. The canton will thus support the CHF 264 million project with CHF 102 million.

The project is intended to convert bus line 10 between Bern and Ostermundigen to streetcar operation. The route of the planned streetcar essentially corresponds to the predecessor project Tram Region Bern, which failed at the ballot box in 2014. However, the streetcar will not go as far as the Rüti hill in Ostermundigen.

Construction to start in 2022 at the latest

From today's perspective, construction is scheduled to start in 2022 at the latest. A construction period of around five years is expected.

First, however, the voters of the city of Berne must decide in November on a loan of 25 million. The municipality of Ostermundigen already made its contribution of 28 million a year ago. The contributions from the federal government are considered guaranteed under the agglomeration program.
