Altdorf: UKB selects design for its new building project at the train station
The Urner Kantonalbank UKB has completed the project competition for its new building project at Bahnhofplatz in Altdorf. The contribution of the Basel general planning team Buchner Bründler Planer / Proplaning is to be realized.

The SBB plans to expand the Altdorf train station into a cantonal station, and the canton of Uri wants to develop the area on the valley floor of Uri. One of the sub-projects at the station is a new building for the Urner Kantonalbank UKB, which is planned to replace the existing station building. The project competition for this has now been completed.
The new building at Bahnhofplatz 1 in Altdorf is to be a "new type of service building for the canton of Uri" and will serve as a mobility hub, UKB says. The architecture of the new building sets a first accent in the context of the development focus Uri valley floor.
The project proposal by Buchner Bründler Planer / Proplaning envisages a five-story structure whose building structure "creates interior spaces that are easy to organize," UKB added. The jury found that the winning project was convincing due to its coherent and compact urban design: "The differentiated design of the building creates the desired presence and address formation at the train station".
According to UKB, the Altdorf cantonal railway station will become "the best location in the canton of Uri" thanks to its hub function in public transport and its development potential into a residential and service center.
The construction project must be realized in the schedule of the SBB from autumn 2019 to the end of 2021. With the conclusion of a preliminary agreement between UKB and SBB, the two parties have agreed to conclude a purchase contract after the building permit has been granted, the statement said. Under the agreement, UKB undertakes to submit a building application for the new building at Bahnhofplatz 1 by January 31, 2019, at the latest. The plot of the Bahnhof Hotel, for which UKB has also secured a right of first refusal, will be included in the planning.
